Forty-nine Students Need Your Help
Let us tell you about the impact of scholarships in rural Guatemala.
Before 2017, the people of Nimasac, Guatemala had never heard of scholarships, much less that the children of the town might be able to receive one, furthering their education. School is compulsory only through sixth grade. Few can go on to middle school, and almost no one could go to high school, much less to university.
When Esperanza de Guatemala introduced them to the possibility of receiving a scholarship so they could continue education, they were intrigued and excited.
Esperanza and its partner Cary Presbyterian Church, hoped to offer five scholarships; the response was that seventeen students received schooling in 2018.
This year, in 2023, we have thirty-seven scholarship students in all levels, and we have just had our second university graduate! WATCH Maria Yolanda's STORY BELOW!
The community in Nimasac is noticing, and there is a sense of hope, "esperanza." These benefits have happened:
- The local elementary teachers are encouraging their students to apply, to continue their education.
- Several of our graduates have jobs in the community.
- A group of women, many of which have scholarships to attend a vocational school for sewing, petitioned for the school to hold classes in Nimasac because there was such interest in learning this skill.
Here’s the critical opportunity for 2024, we have forty-nine applicants!
The breakdown is:
- Twenty-five applicants for a scholarship to local middle and high schools @ $300/apiece.
- Five vocational scholarships applicants @ $600/apiece.
- Nineteen applications for private or university scholarships @ &900/each.
We know this is a challenge. It's a total of $27,500. Our Giving Tuesday goal is $10,500.
Thanks to generous donors like you, there’s a lot of hope and brighter futures relying on this Giving Tuesday. Give hope (esperanza) today.
