Students take their scholarships seriously.

Education is only compulsory in Guatemala through 6th grade. Most Mayan families cannot even afford to send their children to middle school, more so high school, or especially, university.

But we can. And we do. With your help.

For 2025, our seventh year of the scholarship program, 50 students have applied for scholarships from Esperanza de Guatemala and its major partner, Cary Presbyterian Church. Return sponsors are generously providing many of those scholarships to date. But not all students have sponsors and support yet. Clearly, your support is needed for these others.

Here's how:

1. There are 4 Levels of support.

  • Level I-Nimasac is for just that: students who want to go to the local middle school, @ $150/yr.
  • Level I-Other is for students going to area schools, ordinarily middle, a few high school, at $300/yr.
  • Level II - for vocational students, usually adults. These are covered!
  • Level III - our largest category, for students going down to the city to a non-public school or university. [Yes! There are 6 university students!] We have a total of 26 students this year in this category.
  • But also, there is a general category for gifts to go into the overall scholarship fund, and we will find the best way to use that. Sometimes people give a partial scholarship (for example, they give $450), and we make up the difference.

2. Simply click on the Level of gift you are making. Please leave a note to indicate any specific requests.

What do we ask of sponsors?

We will provide you with an All About Me sheet from your student, likely in March or April of this year. Then, around May we will ask you to write a short note about who you are and words of encouragement to your student. Going to school in Guatemala is as much a challenge there as it is here in the US--perhaps more. Then, your student will write you back, and you will likely receive that in August or September. Note that the school year in Guatemala runs from the end of January to the end of October. If you don't wish to do the note, please just let us know by emailing medora@esperanzadeguatemala.org.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for changing the trajectory of a student's life in Nimasac, Guatemala, and area towns from flat to soaring. By giving the gift of education, you are strengthening the entire community and area. It is truly life-giving! Muchas gracias.
